Healthy habits for a happy life (Part 1)

You've most likely heard of the notion that a healthy body leads to a healthy mind? Yeah, well there is a lot to be said for that. Not only does keeping your body well nourished with the right food and exercise keep you looking amazing, it makes you feel so darn good that your self esteem will skyrocket - what's not to love about that?!

When your mind and body are in sync it means you get to show up and be your awesome shining self.

I wanted to share with you some simple habits that will lead to you living a happier + healthier life. And because I have so many to share, I've decided to split this up over two posts (part two will go up next week).

#1. Go to bed earlier + get up earlier.

I used to always be night owl and stay up late mindlessly surfing the internet and watching television, but over the past few months I have made a conscious effort to be in bed by 10-10:30pm and then make sure I get up at 6am. The first thing I do in the morning is meditate which sets a beautiful tone for the day ahead. I then have enough time to enjoy a healthy breakfast + pack my lunch for the day so I am not rushing and have plenty of time to get to work. Since I've been doing this I've found my natural body rhythm has adapted and I no longer need an alarm clock to wake up. Just making this simple shift has made such a difference, I feel brighter and so much more mentally alert - plus I'm also relying less on sugar and caffeine to get me through the day.

Try it for 3 weeks and see how you feel - I know you will feel amazing!

#2. Eliminate processed + fried foods from your diet.

Making one change to your diet and eliminating processed + fried foods will have an enormous impact on your health. These so-called 'foods' have zero nutritional value which means that what you're eating is not really food. Sure, you can put it in your mouth and eat it, but in no way is it providing your body with the nutrients and nourishment it needs and is in fact doing your body damage.

Rather than limiting yourself to a particular 'diet', just focus on eating whole foods instead, that is, food that has not been manufactured or processed in any way - think vegetables, fruits, grains, eggs, nuts + seeds - you get the picture.

#3. Say "No" more often.

I know this is easier said than done, but I urge you to try it and see how empowering it feels. Rather than saying you 'can't' do something, saying 'no' is actually far more empowering as it means that you are actively making the decision not to engage in the activity. Consciously choose to only attend events, see people and do things that you are genuinely excited about and have no sense of obligation towards.

Remember - this is your life and you have the power to create one you genuinely love.

A good exercise to try if you're feeling overwhelmed is to make a list of the 5 most important priorities in your life right now. If something comes up that doesn't fit with your priorities then you will know to politely decline.

#4. Move your body for at least 30 minutes each day.

I could go on and on about the benefits of exercise, but I'm sure you have heard it all before. What I will say is this - moving your body is an opportunity for you to really show yourself how much you love, respect and care for YOU.

You may think you don't have time, but exercising actually gives you more energy and helps you to be focused - so really, if you don't exercise you are limiting yourself from creating your best life. Exercise doesn't need to be boring either - find something that works for you.

What works for one person will not necessarily be right for you, so try as many things as you can until you find something you think is fun - this way it will never seem a like a chore!

#5. Smile, even when there’s no pressing reason to do so.

Smiling is the simplest thing you can do that will make you feel happier, look younger and glowingly radiant.

Because smiling releases serotonin and endorphins, it will instantly boost your mood and help reduce stress.

Plus, did you know that smiling is contagious?

Try it for yourself - smile at someone and I bet they will smile back - it's hard not to! Smile for no reason at all, other than you are alive, free, and have a world of endless possibilities that lie ahead.

Stay tuned for part two next week + if you liked this post then share it and spread the love!

Much love, Rachel xx
