Healthy habits for a happy life (Part 2)


Last week I shared 5 healthy habits for living a happy life but to be honest I found it hard to stop there, so today I have 5 more to share with you. Let's dive into part 2!

#1. Cultivate a positive mindset.

Yep, it all starts here: cultivating a positive mindset is the first and most important step to make to start creating a happy and healthy life you love. Once you have made this shift then suddenly you are viewing life in an entirely different perspective which is an incredibly liberating feeling!  It means you are now free to make empowering decisions in your life that will only lift you higher and propel you forward in the direction of your dreams.

Be mindful of your thoughts - compassion, love, peace, courage, faith and hope are all positive, high energy states. This is the zone where you want to direct your thoughts. On the flip side, judgement, fear, envy, anxiety and guilt are all low and negative energy states - spending time focusing on these is only going to drag you down.

#2. Be present. Focus on where you are, what you’re doing and who you’re with right now.

Worrying about future events and living in the past is a waste of time. One of my favourite quotes that sums this up beautifully is; "yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift of God, which is why we call it the present".

Every day in each and every moment we have the opportunity to create our own future. Everything in our life is a result of our thoughts, words and actions and in every moment can actively choose how we respond to certain situations or events that happen, and most importantly how we relate to people around us.

Start becoming aware of where your attention is focused when you are engaging in something, be it a conversation with someone or a task you are doing. Ask yourself - are you fully engaged in the task at hand or is your mind elsewhere? Your future is in your hands, so spend your time wisely actively creating one that you love.

#3. Practice gratitude. Daily.

When we practice gratitude and focus on being thankful for what we do have rather than what we don't have, we suddenly start to realise how abundantly rich we are.  If we are not grateful for what we have, then why would we then be happy with more? Even when we are dealt a rough card or things may not go our way, there is always something to be thankful for. Start with being thankful that you have a sound mind, a warm bed to go home to, clean water, the internet and access to a computer or mobile phone…. I could go on, but it’s very easy to take these things for granted.

A good practice to get into is to keep a gratitude journal where at the end of each day you write a list of 5 things you are grateful for that happened during that day. Just reflecting on all of our many blessings makes us realise how very lucky we actually are.

#4. Don't dwell on problems. Focus on solutions instead.

Thinking about everything that's wrong with a situation or circumstance is a very easy trap to fall into. Spending too much dwelling on the negatives or obstacles in our way leads to perpetuating a negative mindset and closing ourselves off to the opportunities they may in fact present. Life is full of highs and lows and there will always be challenges for us to overcome, but it’s how we respond to these problems that will determine our success.

Next time you are faced with a challenge or obstacle, focus on the positives and what is within your power to change or influence the situation. You may not have the money to start your business and quit your job tomorrow, but there are steps in between that you can take to work towards your ultimate goal.

#5. Do something nice for someone else.

Bestowing random acts of kindness and showing compassion to others is not only an amazing gift for the person on the receiving end, it will also make you feel really good because when we give to another person, it comes back to us.

Make it your intention to spread kindness and love wherever you go and think about the incredible ripple effect it would have on the world if everyone bestowed this gift onto others.

Start small with things like holding the door open for the person behind you, smiling at strangers, giving your seat up on the bus, or letting someone jump ahead of you in the queue, and see how good it feels.
